Lack of Control

Trend story

Knowing the difference between reality and fiction is something we learn as a child. However, alone and presented with a new environment, specifically one far from home can offer challenging tasks which test this ability to easily see what around you is genuine or not. Isolated and in unknown territory can bring out a naivety and helplessness which can only be comforted by your own personal mindset.

Stemming from the themes of naivety and loneliness from space related films Moon, Gravity and 2001: A space odyssey, this trend explores helplessness and human disorientation when in vulnerable and unfamiliar places.

Moon [2009, Duncan Jones]

This short clip from the film Moon shows the point where the main character Sam, discovers he is a clone of the original Sam Bell. This film explores the lack of personal control and life choice 'Sam' is able to make, with hundreds of clone bodies waiting to be brought to life for when an accident occurs the 'Sam' clones are given no choice but to live this life.

Will they keep the Sam clones working in space until they run out?

Sam has been forced into a complete lifetime of seclusion and isolation without his consent or knowledge.

Gravity [2013, Alfonso CuarĂ³n]

This clip is from the 2013 film Gravity. Although the film as a whole does not connote the right messages for this trend, this clip is a really powerful reference point for key symbols within for the concept 'Lack of Control'.

Well fitted and somewhat restricting garments developed with structured fabrics will convey constraints and limitations of personal mindsets in challenging settings. Shifted seams and oddly placed zips will accentuate the disjointed perception.

David Spriggs: archaeology of space

This work is created with multi layers panels consisting of transparent drawing which create a third dimension illusion. Although a simple concept and not hidden from the views the outcomes still create a sense of interest and wonder.

These sculptural drawings appear to be small scaled explosion trapped in glass, frozen in time, stopped before any real damage is done.

Unfamiliar and unexplored environments can create a sense of vulnerability and unease for an individual. Stepping into the unknown not knowing what you will face can prove daunting and unnerving to most. These issues can develop and strengthen a mind set or send it to a state which can develop fear and phobia.

Unknown surroundings and structures which cant be controlled and have damaging effects, can create uncertainty and can show personal weakness leaving the individual exposed, unprotected and even frozen.

Restraining garments will embody personal set backs, and feeling exposed in certain environments.

Garments with fastenings which will need a second person to open or close embodies personal vulnerability.

Jason Pollock

‘When I am painting I am not much aware of what is taking place”

Pollock’s free and intuitive style of painting allow his inner thoughts and emotions to find a direct vision.

The painting is very disorientated and from it I have created these print ideas which are more controlled yet still embodies  naivety and detachment.

The Hurvin Anderson
Reporting back
Ikon Gallery

This exhibition evokes Anderson’s sensations of being caught up between two places at once. Being surrounded by hundreds of people can leave you feeling more alone, trapped and yet more exposed than you would in your own personal space.

The geometric grids layering his work shows a new space that wouldn’t have necessarily been there before.

Cecily Brennan

This set of photographs by Cecily Brennan shows an individual fighting against a powerful injection of what appears to be oil. The individual looses all personal control and their strength and ability is devoured by the black wave. The person here appears vulnerable and
dependent for help.

Well fitted and almost restraining garments will be made with oddly placed fastenings and seams to embody this sense of vulnerability.
