Some people choose seclusion as a way of life. Others have a more unnatural, forced isolation thrust upon them. Both can be seen as beneficial or obstructing depending upon the person or persons creating the confinement. Possession, protection and obsession due to high levels of lust often play a leading role when creating an isolate life, and it is onlooker’s responses that can shape and form a superficial identity encapsulating the imprisoned.
Differing opinions and beliefs are transformed into the strength and structure in contrasting fabrics; similar designs with contrasting materials will create delicacy and tranquillity, or conversely a forced, heavy construction.

The Virgin Suicides [1993 Jeffrey Eugenides]
I watched and part read The Virgin Suicides to find a starting point for this concept.
The film is set in the 1970's and tell the story of the Lisbon sisters and is centred on their suicides and how these events fascinate and draw in the unwanted attention from onlooking neighbours as they try to draw up conclusions as to why the girls feel the need to kill themselves.
“And so we started to learn about their lives. Coming to hold collective memories of times we hadn’t experienced.”
“...we had pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together gaps remained. Oddly shaped emptiness shaped by what surrounded them.”

Personal identity can be transformed into one controlled and structured by someone else. Combinations of different fabric weights and structures will stress the difference in this
personality imprisonment.

Perception and personal opinions often display levels of naivety and lack of complete understanding. These perceptions build up and can group together to create a superficial identity upon a person or situation. This can create that person or situation to then tailor its development to this new artificial way of life leaving its reality behind.

Through Darkest America by Truck and Tank
This exhibition is created entirely from urban waste such as billboard sheets, posters and newsprints. These collaged paintings consider social perception where image and context are used together to encourage an option. Although these images connote a discerning subject, Bradford has created these beautifully fashioned paintings giving them a new identity.

Adjusting and manipulating parts of this image allowed me to create these print ideas. They offer a gentler and less understanding vision, creating naivety for the viewer. These prints will be used on thick, structured cottons and thin chiffons.

Developing your personal state to fit into a superficial identity or to change a perception whether for positive development or not, leaves an untrue personality. Changing your personal mind set can leave you leading an artificial life and inner spaces used for
controlling these supposed anomalies can build up to a state which can result in sudden
drastic outbursts.
Differing opinions and identity development will be transformed into fabric choice for the garments. Differing weight and structures in similar silhouettes will embody this
change.
